The retina is the ‘film’ in the camera of your eye — containing over 130 million photoreceptors. Retinal diseases are a leading cause of blindness in India, most linked to diabetes, hypertension, and ageing. At Bhakti Netralaya, we bring expert retina care directly to Malkapur and Burhanpur.

About the Retina
The Retina — Your Eye’s Most Vital Tissue
The retina is the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye — often described as the ‘film’ in the camera of the eye. Measuring just 0.5mm in thickness, the retina contains over 130 million photoreceptors and is one of the most metabolically active tissues in the human body.
Diseases of the retina are a leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in India — and the majority are associated with conditions that are already prevalent in our community — diabetes, hypertension, and ageing.
At Bhakti Netralaya, our Medical Retina Services provide expert diagnosis, comprehensive investigation, and evidence-based treatment for the full spectrum of retinal diseases. Early detection and timely intervention are the most important factors in preserving vision — and our facility brings this expertise directly to Malkapur and Burhanpur.
Retina — Key Facts

Conditions We Treat
Retinal Conditions We Diagnose & Treat
Most Critical — Diabetic Eye Disease
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults worldwide. It develops when chronically elevated blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels supplying the retina. The tragedy — it can be completely asymptomatic while significant, potentially irreversible damage is already occurring.
Stage 01 · Early
Non-Proliferative DR
Microaneurysms, haemorrhages, and retinal oedema without new blood vessel growth. Detectable only on examination — no symptoms.
Stage 02 · Advanced
Proliferative DR
New, fragile blood vessels grow on the retina or optic disc — at high risk of bleeding and traction retinal detachment. Sight-threatening.
Stage 03 · Vision Threatening
Diabetic Macular Oedema
Fluid accumulation in the macula — the most common cause of vision loss in diabetic patients. Treatable with intravitreal injections.
Every diabetic patient — regardless of visual symptoms — should have a dilated retinal examination at least annually. We strongly recommend every person with diabetes in the Malkapur and Buldhana region registers for regular retinal screening. Call 92096 57063 to register.
Age-Related Condition
Macular Degeneration (AMD)
AMD is the leading cause of irreversible central vision loss in people over 50 — and increasingly prevalent in India. The macula — the central portion of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed, colour vision — degenerates progressively.
Type 01 · Common
Dry AMD
Gradual deposition of drusen (yellowish deposits) under the retina causing slow progressive central vision loss. No current cure — monitored closely with nutritional support.
Slow Progressive · MonitoredType 02 · Treatable
Wet AMD
Abnormal new blood vessels (choroidal neovascularisation) grow under the macula and leak fluid or blood — causing rapid, severe vision loss. Treatable with intravitreal anti-VEGF injections.
Rapid Vision Loss · Urgent TreatmentRetinal Vascular Occlusions
Vein Blockage
Central Retinal Vein Occlusion
Blockage of the main retinal vein causing widespread haemorrhages and macular oedema — leading to significant central and peripheral vision loss.
CRVO · TreatableBranch Blockage
Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion
Blockage of a branch retinal vein causing a sector of haemorrhage and macular oedema — usually affecting a defined area of the visual field.
BRVO · TreatableEmergency
Central Retinal Artery Occlusion
Sudden blockage of the central retinal artery — a true ocular emergency. Presents with sudden, painless, profound vision loss. Requires immediate evaluation.
⚠ EmergencySudden painless vision loss in one eye is an emergency. Central retinal artery occlusion requires immediate evaluation — within minutes to hours. Call 92096 57063 immediately if you or someone experiences sudden, complete vision loss in one eye.

Our Retina Diagnostic Workup
Advanced Retinal Imaging & Diagnosis
Early detection of retinal disease requires specialist equipment and expert evaluation. At Bhakti Netralaya our comprehensive retinal diagnostic suite includes all of the following.
Dilated Fundus ExaminationComprehensive evaluation of the retina, macula, optic disc, and peripheral retina by an experienced specialist
Fundus PhotographyHigh-resolution documentation of the retinal appearance for monitoring disease progression and treatment response
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)Cross-sectional retinal imaging with micron-level resolution — essential for DMO, AMD, macular hole, and epiretinal membrane
Fluorescein AngiographyDynamic imaging of retinal blood flow using IV fluorescein dye — essential for characterising vascular disease and guiding laser
B-Scan UltrasonographyEvaluation of the posterior segment when retinal visualisation is limited by media opacity such as dense cataract or vitreous haemorrhage
Treatment Options
Medical Retina Treatment at Bhakti Netralaya
We offer the complete spectrum of retinal treatment — from intravitreal injections and laser photocoagulation to complex vitreoretinal surgery. Every treatment plan is individualised based on the specific condition, its severity, and the patient’s overall health.
First-Line Treatment
Intravitreal Injections
Anti-VEGF agents (Ranibizumab, Bevacizumab, Aflibercept) injected directly into the vitreous cavity — the gold standard for wet AMD, diabetic macular oedema, and retinal vascular occlusions.
Intravitreal steroids are used for refractory macular oedema that does not respond to anti-VEGF therapy.
Anti-VEGF · Steroid · IntravitrealLaser Treatment
Retinal Laser Photocoagulation
Focal and grid laser for diabetic macular oedema — targeting leaking microaneurysms and areas of retinal thickening.
Panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) for proliferative diabetic retinopathy and ischaemic retinal vascular disease — reducing new vessel formation.
Focal · Grid · PRP LaserSelect Cases
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
Photodynamic therapy using verteporfin activated by non-thermal laser light — used for select cases of wet AMD and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) that are not suitable for anti-VEGF alone.
Wet AMD · CSCR · Select CasesMacular Surgery
Vitreomacular Interface Surgery
Pars plana vitrectomy for macular hole, epiretinal membrane, and vitreomacular traction syndrome — microsurgical removal of vitreous and membrane tissue to restore macular anatomy and vision.
Macular Hole · ERM · VTMEmergency Surgery
Retinal Detachment Surgery
Surgical repair of retinal detachment using pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckle, or pars plana vitrectomy — technique selected based on the type, location, and extent of the detachment. Time-critical: early surgery achieves the best outcomes.
Urgent · Multiple TechniquesCritical Message for Every Diabetic Patient
Diabetes & Your Retina — Do Not Wait for Symptoms
If you have diabetes, your retina is at risk — even if your vision currently feels completely normal. Diabetic retinopathy can be present and progressing without any visual symptoms whatsoever. The only way to detect it early enough to treat effectively is through regular dilated retinal examination. Please do not wait for blurring or vision change to appear. By then, significant and irreversible damage may already have occurred.
